UK Self-employment Income Support Scheme

The UK Government has announced support if you’re self-employed or a member of a partnership and have lost income due to the coronavirus. This scheme will allow you to claim a taxable grant worth 80% of your trading profits up to a maximum of £2,500 per month for the next 3 months.

To be eligible for self-employment income support you must:

  • have submitted your Income Tax Self Assessment tax return for the tax year 2018-19
  • have traded in the tax year 2019-20
  • be trading when you apply, or would be except for COVID-19
  • intend to continue to trade in the tax year 2020-21
  • have lost trading/partnership trading profits due to COVID-19

Local Support

Business Gateway Inverclyde services are delivered on behalf of Inverclyde Council and are an integral part of the Council's support to local business. The Business Gateway team work very closely with the Council's in-house business support and employability teams to ensure that local businesses and individuals looking to start up, establish and grow their business receive the best possible support. Inverclyde Council offers a wide range of support to help local businesses develop and grow, including:

(Please note that the retail sector and sectors where there is likely to be high displacement of other local business activity, will not be eligible for any grant other than the Property Assistance Scheme grant.)

Young Company Development Fund

This fund can provide 50 percent of eligible property improvement, capital expenditure and rental costs, up to a maximum of £10,000. A number of criteria apply including the requirement to be working with a Business Gateway adviser and for companies to be trading for less than 5 years.

Investment Fund

This fund can provide interest free, repayable finance of between £1,000 and £5,000 over a period of 1 to 2 years. It can be used for working capital, the purchase of equipment (new or used) and for the refurbishment of commercial property. Further eligibility criteria apply, including the requirement to be working with a Business Gateway adviser.

Small Business Assistance Grant

Offers support of up to 50 percent of total costs to a maximum of £5,000 for capital expenditure.

Property Assistance Scheme

Offers support of up to 50 percent of total costs for signage, security and general improvements to business properties. Where total project costs are in excess of £50,000, grants of up to £10,000 may be considered.

Tourism Grant

Offers support of up to 50 percent of total costs to a maximum of £1,000 for tourism related business development activities. Improvements to services, facilities and marketing activities will be eligible for support.

Marketing Grant

Offers support of up to 50 percent of costs to a maximum of £1,000 for marketing activities essential to the continued success of tourism businesses only.

Small Business Loan Scheme

Offers interest free loans up to a maximum of £5,000 to local businesses seeking gap funding for start-up and expansion projects.

West of Scotland Loan Fund:

Loans of up to £30,000 for SME's operating for less than two years and up to £50,000 for those trading longer are available. These can be used for working capital, plant/equipment and business property. 50 percent of the total funding package must be provided by the private sector.

Employer Plus Partnership

The Partnership comprises a range of public and third sector agencies working together to provide local Inverclyde businesses with the support they need to address their employment needs through a single point of contact. Support available includes free recruitment services, recruitment incentives and access to a pool of young people learning new skills on national and local training programmes.

Business Training Support

We may be able to offer business training support for management level training.

The Small Business Assistance Scheme offers business training support of up to 50% of total costs to a maximum of £2,000 for training for business development training which will have the potential to improve the business turnover/profitability or employment.


Supplier Development Programme (SDP)

SDP is a public sector partnership which delivers a variety of FREE tender training, via classroom style workshops working in conjunction with Local Authorities across Scotland, digitally via webinar and also provides a range of online resources connecting businesses with the Scottish public sector. Registration for SDP events is free for Scottish SMEs, and will connect your business with your local authority’s SDP Rep who can offer your business additional support.
