Al Roberto, founder of Simmer Kitchen and the driving force behind Cupar’s acclaimed restaurant Osteria, is no ordinary chef. Dubbed ‘The Rockstar Chef’ for both his culinary flair and his musical talents, Al has carved a unique space in the UK’s hospitality scene by combining traditional Italian cuisine with bold French and British influences, elevating private dining to an intimate and immersive experience.
Born into a large Italian family that emigrated to Leeds in the 1970s, Al's early exposure to vibrant flavours and spirited family gatherings ignited a lifelong love of food. His move to Fife, inspired by childhood holidays and a desire for a slower pace, has since transformed into a regional success story, one that marries fine dining with grassroots charm.
At the heart of Al’s vision is Osteria, a cozy Cupar restaurant that not only serves beautifully crafted dishes, but celebrates local producers and cultural connection. He’s currently transforming its mezzanine into an exclusive twelve-seat chef’s table for tasting menus with potential for music nights and exhibitions of local artists, creating an unforgettable experience for diners.
Al explained, “The key to success is keeping the menu focused and creating dishes that bring people together. I source almost everything locally, coffee from East Neuk Coffee Company, butter I churn myself, and even infuse Tayport gin into David Lowry’s mackerel. I want Osteria to be a cherished place where the community gathers and good food sparks conversation.”
With collaborations spanning household names like Lidl and Carlsberg’s Italian lager Poretti, to bespoke culinary experiences for Lindores Distillery and Pillars of Hercules, Al is one of the most sought-after demonstration chefs in England and Scotland. His versatility, whether in client homes, regional festivals, or high-profile venues, continues to attract attention from national brands and local partners alike.
Beyond the kitchen, Al teaches music in local high schools and is passionate about community development, blending creativity with leadership in every project he touches.
Business Gateway Fife, through Business Adviser, Karen Cassells, is supporting Al’s entrepreneurial journey. She commented, “He’s built strong networks and dynamic collaborations. With his passion and expertise, I’m confident the next chapter for Osteria will be even more special.”
