About the business

When Kathy Powrie found herself at a crossroads in life, she had two choices – to leave her home in Inverkeilor and move elsewhere, or stay and create her own opportunity. Fortunately for locals, she and business partner Lisa Turnbull chose the latter and went on to launch the village’s popular tearoom and bar, 2nd Chance.

Business Gateway helped me understand what it takes to launch a successful business, giving me practical and helpful advice on my business plan, contacts in the area and funding opportunities. It’s been a fantastic source of help and I would encourage anyone to see what they can learn from their local advisers.

How Business Gateway has helped

Kathy and Lisa were able to access vital 1:1 advice from their dedicated Business Gateway adviser. The support they received included help with their business plan, attendance at workshops, including 'A Guide to Starting a Business', and support carrying out market research through the free research service.

Business Gateway also signposted the pair to suitable funding opportunities and put them in touch with the relevant contacts who had experience starting a business in the area.

Kathy Powrie, Co-Owner, 2nd Chance Tearoom, “After a new housing estate was built in the local area, I spotted a gap in the market for a tearoom and shop that would provide a place for new residents to gather and socialise with the locals. However, I didn’t have the knowledge to launch the venture, so approached Business Gateway who helped guide me towards new opportunities.

Donna Williamson, Business Gateway adviser, said: “Kathy’s success shows the potential of a business idea. From spotting a gap in the market, to making it a reality, this has been a strong start for a new business, and as her business continues to grow, we will continue to support her.”
