Tayside businesses respond to COVID-19 shortages

Keeping hands clean was quickly identified early on as one of the best ways to avoid the spread of COVID-19. As a result, panic buying quickly created shortages of hand sanitizer across the country, particularly on the front-line in hospitals and care homes.

Two distilleries who have been supported by Business Gateway in their growth and expansion – Toll House Spirits of Angus and Verdant Spirits of Dundee – recognised there was an opportunity to support local front-line workers, using production facilities to produce hand sanitizer.

Toll House Spirits produces the popular Redcastle Gin brand, along with seasonally inspired liqueurs and a spiced rum. Managing Director, Fiona Walsh, Toll House Spirits, said, “Since the lockdown, we have continued to distil gin for delivery and have been fortunate to see a sales increase.

“We also wanted to do our part to support wider efforts to tackle COVID-19 and since alcohol - at over 65% strength, is effective at killing viruses, we were well placed to produce hand-sanitisers for key workers and the public with the support of Arbroath based Distillutions.”

Likewise, Andrew Mackenzie, Founder of Verdant Spirits who produce a variety of premium craft spirits, diversified production for the greater good.

He said, “This period has proved to be a challenging time for many across the industry and we’re very proud to be able to support and help the local community during this difficult period.”

Both businesses have worked with Business Gateway to scale up in recent years. One to one business support and a review of business plans helped Verdant Spirits secure a tender with the House of Commons earlier this year and Toll House Spirits is receiving help with the development of an export strategy.

Business Gateway has quickly adapted to continue providing business support to those starting up, diversifying or growing their business, while navigating the uncertainty imposed by COVID-19.
