Avtek Solutions continues growth towards net zero

Dunfermline-based, Avtek Solutions has come a long way in its ten years of operation. From a team of four at the outset, the business has grown organically and now employs 47 staff.

With the team’s vast experience, the company delivers to a variety of sectors: specialist glass solutions from curtain walling and structural glazing through to brise soleil and general commercial glazing.

Over the past ten years Avtek has evolved its offering to the construction sector. Initially the focus was on small educational buildings (small scale window installations only), and now the company is dealing with a wide range of Tier 1 main construction companies on a variety of different sectors. Avtek now has in-house design teams offering the complete package across a number of multi-million pound projects in Healthcare, Education, Residential, Leisure, Refurbishment and Retail.

Mark Lawrie, Avtek’s Operations Director, explained, “On this journey we’ve secured accreditations with ISO, Construction Line and CHAS. This year Avtek is delighted to confirm, having recently being fully audited by NQA, our accreditations for ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 have all been re-certified. These accreditations demonstrate our commitment to excellence and form a key part of our regulation and compliance aims. Eighty per cent of Avtek’s staff live within a ten-mile radius from our offices and we have invested heavily in staff development and training and will continue to diversify into new products which meet Avtek’s aim of achieving net zero with low carbon-based solutions. We are also very excited about our latest project working with Balfour Beatty on the construction of the new HMP Highland prison in Inverness, Scotland’s first net zero prison. For the third time in three years, we are also working with McLaughlin & Harvey at the University of Edinburgh on its School of Engineering following completion of the Nucleus building and the USHER institute.”

One of the key company objectives is to continue to lead with PASSIVHAUS, (the standard for energy efficiency in a building, which reduces the building's carbon footprint) delivery solutions. Working with Robertson Construction, Avtek was one of the first companies to be involved in delivering Riverside Primary School in North Muirton, Perth, which was Scotland’s first accredited PASSIVHAUS school and other similar school contracts followed across Scotland.

Post Grenfell Tower tragedy, the company is anticipating an increase in remedial and refurbishment requests, therefore the team is looking into offering cladding solutions to the construction sector that safely upgrade and refurbish existing projects throughout the UK, similar to the velocity Village project recently completed in Sheffield.

As a client of Business Gateway Fife, Mark added, “Avtek is very thankful for the start-up assistance received which offered excellent advice and IT service support. Access to business finance assisted the business greatly in the early introductory stages and we appreciate the ongoing support from business adviser, Lynne Baillie, whose advice has been invaluable from day one.”
