Scotland’s regions each have their own unique characteristics, and these can influence how businesses approach finance. Factors such as location (urban, rural, coastal), business owner background (gender, age, ethnicity), local business base, size and maturity of businesses, and sector mix all play a role in shaping attitudes toward external finance.
Now in its third year, this report explores how these factors impact SMEs across Scotland. The research provides a clear view of how access to finance challenges differ by region, helping you better understand and respond to local needs. We hope the findings provide valuable insights to further support your work with businesses.
Key Findings:
- 69% of Scottish SMEs reported using finance
- 13% of smaller businesses in Scotland reported experiencing barriers to accessing finance
- 85% of Scotland based businesses perceived their cash flow position as positive
- Smaller businesses based in Aberdeen and North East Scotland were also most inclined to anticipate growth (64%) in the year ahead
Councillor Gail Macgregor, Chair of the Business Gateway Board and COSLA Spokesperson for the Environment & Economy, comments:
"At Business Gateway, we recognise the crucial role that the businesses we support play in driving Scotland’s economy. Our partnership with the British Business Bank on their annual finance survey ensures that the voices of businesses of all sizes are represented. The insights gathered will help shape future financial support and funding opportunities, making it simpler for businesses to access the resources they need to grow and thrive.”
