A couple who began designing and creating unique hand illustrated stationary as a hobby are now racking up to 100 online sales a week.
Megan and Chris Hicklin from Edinburgh set up Neon Magpie in 2015 and sell their unicorn inspired cards, prints, notepads and mugs, via retailers Etsy and Not On the High Street as well as gift shops across the capital.
With support from the DigitalBoost programme, which is delivered by Business Gateway on behalf of Digital Scotland, Megan and Chris’ own website www.neon-magpie.co.uk has been revamped leading to a significant increase in sales to customers throughout the UK and beyond.
All of Neon Magpie’s products are designed by Megan, 27, a graduate in fashion communication and Chris, 26, who studied Painting.
After the success of their greeting card range, the couple have recently launched a collection of invitations and party accessories.
Megan said: “We came up with an idea for an A-Z of Unicorns colouring book and due to its popularity we used the same theme to illustrate and create greeting cards. We had no idea they would prove so popular and after selling out our first batch in two days we decided to set up Neon Magpie. I illustrate while Chris digitally colours them so it’s a real creative partnership that we really enjoy. We have many repeat customers and so far the feedback and reviews we’ve had from the public have been fantastic and has played a big part in us selling more.
“We initially went along to Business Gateway as we were hoping to find a mentor to push us in the right direction but it became apparent quickly that we would benefit massively from the DigitalBoost programme. The support we received was focused on our website and how we should update it in order to maximise online sales. This led to us changing platform to Shopify which has made a big difference to our business with its links to Royal Mail posting. We also gained SEO advice to allow us to achieve more organic Google hits which has led directly to more sales which is terrific.”
Delighted with their improved website and sales, Megan and Chris are now adding gold foiled cards to their collection as well as contacting more potential stockist around the country.
Megan added: “We want to capitalise on our recent digital achievements by introducing new products to our site and hopefully attracting more stockists. We still can’t quite believe our little hobby is doing so well but we’re now committed to growing it further and seeing where we can go with it.”
