Nakey Bakey cooking up future growth

Nakey Bakey began as a personal solution for founder Megan Murrie, who lives with Endometriosis and a nut allergy. Struggling to find foods that were both safe and enjoyable, she started experimenting in her kitchen.

What began as a hobby quickly evolved into a business built around cleanlabel, allergenfree granola and, more recently, Nakey Nibbles.

With no initial grand plan, Megan rented a small kitchen to produce her recipes safely and soon discovered a wider demand for allergenfree products. Her valuesled approach has shaped the company’s growth, prioritising food safety, transparency, and longterm sustainability. “I never set out to build a business,” Megan explained, “I was just trying to make something I could eat. Seeing it help others too has been incredibly motivating and I love building the brand.”

The business moved into its own manufacturing unit in Southfield, Glenrothes last year, marking a significant step forward. Recent milestones include expanding the production team, achieving SALSA for safe and local supplier approval, and being named one of Scotmid’s Scottish Favourites, paving the way for Nakey Bakey products to appear in Scotmid Coop stores across Scotland.

Support from the Scotland Food & Drink SALSA Go Programme, a dedicated SALSA mentor, and Karen Cassells, Business Adviser at Business Gateway Fife has helped the company strengthen its systems and secure an SME grant for allergen testing as well as introductions to the Scottish Manufacturing Advice Service (SMAS) for manufacturing process support. Karen noted, “Megan has shown real determination and commitment, taking steps to ensure the business is future proofed for success.” 

Megan added, “We’re now supplying 18 high schools across Fife, which is something I’m incredibly proud of. Being able to bring allergen-free granola into schools and play a small part in supporting healthier food choices feels like a meaningful step for the business.”
