Let the Distilling Be-Gin

Hazell and Hazell looked to Business Gateway for advice on relocation and exporting.

About the Business

Situated below the beautiful Campsie Fells, award-winning distillers Hazell and Hazell are the only business of their kind based in East-Dunbartonshire. The distillery was established in 2016 and is now operating from premises at Bardowie Loch – an area steeped in distilling history. The Jaw – the old miller’s cottage that forms the premises of the distillery – is situated on the site of an illicit 19th century distillery. An article from The Glasgow Herald in 1822 described the actions of a particularly vigilant Excise Man who apprehended a gang of illegal distillers at the west end of Bardowie Loch.

After setting up successful microbrewery Jaw Brew, business owners Mark and Allison Hazell expanded their distilling capabilities to gin in 2016 due to demand from their Jaw Brew customers. The London Dry gin is produced using inspiration from the surrounding loch and is distilled with with coriander, juniper berry, angelica root and orange peel to create a unique flavour combination that promises a distinctly fresh and fragrant drink. The botanicals are then combined with unique foraged ingredients such as blackcurrant, bay, bulrush stem and ground elder to create a product with a local identity.
