Female gas engineer breaks the mould

Julie McGowan's gas business got the support it needed from Business Gateway.

About the business

Gas with CLass is owned and operated by Julie McGowan, who carries out servicing, installing and minor repairs to all gas appliances in domestic properties. Currently, Julie McGowan is the only qualified female gas engineer in Inverclyde, a prospect which excites her and is also proving to be popular amongst her customers.

She often faces confusion and surprise from customers who are expecting a male engineer but doesn’t let this deter her. “On one of my first jobs I was greeted by an elderly gentleman; he asked if there was an engineer coming and I said I am the engineer! He was rather taken aback and asked if I needed help with removing the boiler case, but I assured him I could manage. In the end, he was so complimentary about my work and said that he would let his neighbours know what a good job I had done.”

Business Gateway has supported me from the very beginning of my business journey. From one-to-one support, advice on my business plan, networking opportunities and help with grant applications, the support on offer has been invaluable.
