Why Scotland's independant retailers are still buying face to face

Scotland’s independent retailers are showing resilience in a challenging market – and they say getting out from behind the screen and visiting trade shows is an important part of staying ahead.

There is still nothing quite like the experience of shopping in a good independent store. Customers can see, touch, feel and interact with products, while retailers can offer the personal service and product knowledge that online shopping cannot replicate. And while digital retail continues to play an important role, the number of products returned simply because they weren’t quite right demonstrates the value of seeing products first-hand.

The same principle applies to buyers. For many of Scotland’s leading independent retailers, visiting trade shows and meeting suppliers face to face remains an essential part of their buying calendar. Seeing, touching and experiencing products in person allows buyers to make more informed decisions about what will work for their customers, as well as discover the new products and emerging brands that can give their shops a point of difference.

That message is being reinforced by retailers attending Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring, where buyers return year after year in search of products that can help their businesses thrive.

Helen Crawford from The Old School shop in Beauly says: “Trade Shows are crucial because it's my primary job, as the buyer, to check the quality, first hand, on behalf of my customers. I never buy goods for the shop without seeing, touching (and smelling!) the item first. It's the only way to guarantee that we are stocking the best of the best because I want that for our customers.

“The Scottish Trade Fair is essential - our customers want and seek out Scottish made products and that's the truly unique offer from the Scottish Show.”

With stands steadily booking up for the Spring Show, which takes place from 24–26 January 2027 at the SEC Glasgow, organisers are reporting a wealth of innovation and creativity among Scotland’s producers and suppliers.

The Show’s Launch Gallery, dedicated to new and young companies, has already sold out, with 28 suppliers set to showcase their products, many of them in front of trade buyers for the first time.

Show Director Mark Saunders says: “These Launch Gallery suppliers will be showcasing their products, many for the first time ever, directly to buyers. Retailers who come to the Show have the opportunity to discover these businesses early, build relationships and potentially secure orders. Those who stay away could simply miss the next product or brand that makes a difference to their business.

“If you want to stay ahead in retail and offer your customers genuinely contemporary and innovative products, it’s vital that retailers get out and visit trade shows. In an increasingly digital world, there are still very few better ways to discover new products, meet suppliers and find the products that will give your shop a genuine point of difference.”

For Scotland’s independent retailers, the message is clear: surviving and succeeding in retail is about more than simply competing online. It is about knowing your customers, finding products they want, building strong supplier relationships and continually refreshing the offer in store.

And sometimes the best way to do that is to put down the phone, step away from the screen and walk the aisles of a trade show.

Registration is now open for Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring 2027.
