From April 2027, sole traders with turnover over £30,000 will need to meet new HMRC Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements, including keeping digital records and making quarterly submissions alongside their annual tax return. For business owners still relying on spreadsheets, paper receipts or manual bookkeeping, this may feel like another compliance burden.
Robbie Laing, Senior Account Manager at FreeAgent, has supported accounting and bookkeeping practices across Scotland, Northern Ireland and North East England as they prepare for MTD for Income Tax. He will explain what is changing, when it applies and what affected business owners need to do, including a live demonstration of submitting quarterly returns to HMRC using compliant software.
The session will cut through the jargon and show how cloud accounting tools such as Xero and FreeAgent can make compliance easier while transforming day-to-day business management. Attendees will see how streamlined invoicing, clearer cashflow visibility, reduced manual admin and useful reporting can save time and support better decisions.
By the end, attendees will understand how to prepare for MTD and how getting ahead of the changes can reduce admin, ease stress and give them greater confidence in knowing their numbers.
