After COVID-19: Prepare to reopen your business

Business Gateway Tayside has developed a new digital support series, titled ‘After COVID-19: Prepare to reopen your business’.

Consisting of six set webinars, the series is aimed specifically at those looking to re-open their physical business premises and those ready to rebuild their business in line with Government guidelines. Topics include:

Health and Safety

This webinar will look at how businesses begin their return to work, and do so safely, complying with the law and Government guidance. It will also delve into how SMEs can re-open and take appropriate measures to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on staff, visitors, and contractors.

HR – Returning to work

This webinar will explain the steps you need to take for employees returning to the physical workplace, including those who will be returning to work after furlough leave. It will also cover the responsibilities you need to consider as an employer and how to ensure you are meeting legal requirements.

Leadership - Leading in a Crisis

This webinar will provide guidance for leaders at all levels, including how to: lead through a crisis, provide direction when the future is volatile and complex, look after your own wellbeing, handle competing priorities and remain agile, avoid depending on a sole leader, remaining optimistic and more.

Business Continuity Planning

This webinar will look at the importance of putting a continuity plan into place for future improvement. Key areas of discussion will include business optimisation, reviewing and refining current practice, sales and operations, financial planning, controlling costs and more.

Planning a digital strategy post COVID-19

This webinar will allow businesses to examine new digital options such trading online through a website, offering virtual appointments, click and collect services, and more. It will also focus on how to create an effective digital marketing strategy and the appropriate channels to use, as well as how to market new products and services to new and existing clients.

Sales Recovery Planning

This webinar will assess how consumer behaviour has changed, looking at the specific techniques SMEs can implement in order to progressively generate sales again and establish a refined sales process.

Redundancy to Recovery in Four Steps

Business Gateway Tayside has launched a new specialist service aimed specifically at individuals who are facing redundancy and who may be looking to start their own business.

The service includes a redundancy pack, one to one adviser support and four webinars. Each one-hour webinar follows the Double Diamond approach to help individuals tackle challenges in a four-phase process:

  • Discover
  • Define
  • Develop
  • Deliver

Discover: Part one will focus on an idea generation workshop, with attendees looking at different ways to fall upon business ideas.

Define: Part two will help each attendee understand the importance of market research when exploring the viability of an idea and cover the key elements of the business model canvas for business success.

Develop: Part three will focus on the start-up requirements, with each attendee gaining a plethora of information for turning an idea into a business, including legal requirements and tax.

Deliver: Part four will focus on the funding and finance elements, from a personal survival budget, fixed and variable costs you will need to consider, to developing a cash flow forecast.

Those who attend will be provided with a personalised support pack from their dedicated business adviser.

Scottish Bed & Breakfast Hardship Fund

This fund is to provide hardship relief to B&B and other Small Serviced Accommodation businesses who don't have a business bank account and have not been able to access support through other schemes. Successful applicants will receive a one-off payment of £3,000.

Newly Self-Employed Hardship Fund

A £34 million Newly Self-Employed Hardship Fund with £2,000 grants is available through Scottish Local Authorities to help the newly self-employed who are facing hardship and who are ineligible for UK support (as they became self-employed since April 2019).

Scottish Government Coronavirus Business Support Fund

The Fund is open to applications from today, 24 March 2020 and will offer either:

  • £10,000 grants for small businesses in receipt of the Small Business Bonus Scheme or Rural Relief or businesses who qualify for Small Business Bonus Scheme but instead are in receipt of Nursery Relief, Disabled Relief, Business Growth Accelerator Relief, Fresh Start Relief, Discretionary Sports Relief, Enterprise Areas relief, or Charitable Rate Relief, or;
  • £25,000 grants for hospitality, leisure and retail properties with a rateable value between £18,001 and £50,999.

UK Self-employment Income Support Scheme

The UK Government has announced support if you’re self-employed or a member of a partnership and have lost income due to the coronavirus. This scheme will allow you to claim a taxable grant worth 80% of your trading profits up to a maximum of £2,500 per month for the next 3 months.

To be eligible for self-employment income support you must:

  • have submitted your Income Tax Self Assessment tax return for the tax year 2018-19
  • have traded in the tax year 2019-20
  • be trading when you apply, or would be except for COVID-19
  • intend to continue to trade in the tax year 2020-21
  • have lost trading/partnership trading profits due to COVID-19

Our advisers can help you look at your business challenges and then help you make the next practical steps. Along with that we can introduce you to PACE – Partnership Action for Continuing Employment.

Planning to Start

Developing your Workforce

Taking on new staff can be a challenging process. Our specialist HR adviser, Leigh Hunt, can help with any aspect of taking on and employing staff from recruitment through to training and performance management. Leigh will also be able to point you to financial support such as the Skills Development Scotland Flexible Training Grant.

E Commerce Training

We run a number of workshops locally from our Perth and Dundee offices. These include "Social Media" and "Trading Online". All workshops are free to attend although pre-registration is required to ensure that space is available.

Dundee City Council

The £1 billion transformation of Dundee city waterfront, which encompasses 240 hectares of development land stretching 8km along the River Tay, is a strategic, focused and forward-looking 30 year project (2001-2031) that is propelling the city to international acclaim.

The Economic Development Division in the city work towards the goals of building a strong and sustainable city economy and key sectors in Dundee include digital media, life sciences, contact centres and business tourism.

Funding support includes Dundee Development Grant, E-Zone Grant, Overseas Market Development Grant and Small Business Finance Dundee.

Angus Council

Angus Council offers a range of services to existing businesses of all types operating within Angus. They have a special remit to support those companies operating within the Tourism, sustainable energy and Food & Drink sectors. Angus Ahead web site supports the flourishing tourism sector in Angus and provides visitors to Angus with a dynamic and interactive snapshot of the area.

Funding support is available through Angus Employment Grant providing up to £500 capital grant for a new start business in Angus with growth potential, and up to £500 recruitment grant for new and existing businesses taking on their first PAYE employee. An additional incentive of £250 is provided if employees are aged between 18 and 24.

Perth & Kinross Council

Perth & Kinross Council provide a business support service which will aim to meet the needs of businesses with growth potential in Perth & Kinross. Key sectors in Perth are tourism, renewables, food & drink and retail. Plans were unveiled in Spring 2014 to develop a new Food & Drink Park in Perth which seeks to support continued growth of the food and drink sector through the provision of serviced sites and business infrastructure.

The Angel's Share is a service managed and delivered by The Business Growth Team which is part of Perth & Kinross Council. The Angel's Share aims to match entrepreneurs and investors; helping businesses to develop, grow and succeed with the right support from the right business angels. This is not only in terms of the capital investment but also the matching of skills, experience, personality and vision.

The Growth Team also offer a number of events including a Marketing Master Class and Exporting Breakfast for new exporters.

Perth College

Perth College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands providing a range of courses from access, national certificate to Honours and Masters levels.

Rural LEADER Funding

The latest round of rural LEADER funding is available to Perthshire businesses, third sector projects and community initiatives on a 50% match funding basis. The amount of funding available per project is £1k - £30k and the initial step before any formal application or Business Plan requirement is a straightforward initial expression of interest available via:

This will then go to the local LEADER review board who will assess the project’s eligibility and contact the business directly to progress their application. There is a substantial amount of funding available (£3.8M) for the local area and so applications are welcomed. Projects can be wide ranging and may include third sector and community initiatives, new product development or the advancement of a business’s digital trading function.

Supplier Development Programme (SDP)

SDP is a public sector partnership which delivers a variety of FREE tender training, via classroom style workshops working in conjunction with Local Authorities across Scotland, digitally via webinar and also provides a range of online resources connecting businesses with the Scottish public sector. Registration for SDP events is free for Scottish SMEs, and will connect your business with your local authority’s SDP Rep who can offer your business additional support.
