When Sara Kirkby decided to go it alone with her Livestock Services business she looked to Business Gateway Dumfries and Galloway to help her get things moving.

Four months on and SLK Livestock Services is growing steadily with both local smallholders and larger farming businesses looking to Sarah for everything from lambing assistance, farm administration and livestock weighing to milk recording, calf rearing and nutritional advice.

Sara said: “Although I had the contacts, product knowledge and customers to launch the business I was well aware that I would also benefit from some key business skills. My Business Gateway adviser was a tremendous support and helped me get my head around a range of important issues including marketing, social media, tax and bookkeeping.

“He also registered me with HMRC and helped me secure some much needed start-up funding.  This allowed me to purchase a cattle crush – an essential piece of equipment that allows me to safely secure the animal while it is being handled.”

How we helped Sara:

  • 1:1 advice
  • Marketing support
  • Social Media
  • Funding sources
