When David and Sue Watson took over Balcary House in 2016 the aspiring hoteliers looked to Business Gateway to help them transform the historic Hawick property into a stunning hotel.

Following a complete refurbishment, the picturesque four star boutique hotel boasts ten comfortable rooms/suites accessed from a grand staircase with stunning stained glass window.

In addition, Balcary House offers numerous reception rooms and a bar area which are perfect for a range of functions. For weddings, the extensive landscaped grounds provide the ideal location for a marquee catering for up to around 200 guests.

David said: “The hotel is doing well. We didn’t have experience of the sector before taking on Balcary so it was fantastic having Business Gateway on hand to advise us on the practical side of getting the hotel up and running.

“Marketing is incredibly important in this industry so our adviser’s help to access IT support for our website and social media, was invaluable. Business Gateway also helped to identify funding, which was very useful.”

How we helped David and Sue:

  • 1:1 advice (marketing, networking with local contacts, etc)
  • Funding sources
  • IT support
  • Business planning
